Kimono Inspirations
My love affair with Japan began in high school when my Japanese born Asian History teacher enlightened me to the simple, yet powerful aesthetics that are so prevalent in so much of Japanese culture. In the case of these kimono pieces, I wanted to juxtapose the drama of the dark lighting with the ethereal choreography of each flower’s movement- catching the light just so, as each withering flower dances through space. My love for hand made papers also began at a very young age, so having scored these wonderful Indian papers, hand dyed in subtle colorations, I saw the bridge between the obvious differences in the two aesthetics, hence creating something I hope to be intriguing. By joining them together, and drawing on them subtly, as inspired by the artist Cy Twombly, they take on another dimension.
